Empowering Speaking Skill through Debate: The Case of Afghan EFL Learners at Herat University

Using a quantitative approach, this study investigated the impacts of debate on students’ speaking skills in English-language classes at English Department, Herat University, Afghanistan. The participants were 44 sophomore students (28 girls and 16 boys). To understand participants’ levels, researchers had pre-test followed by six-week treatment having debates class. For measuring debate, post-test was taken. investigate created an online questionnaire form link shared with classes. enriched essential information after treatment. data analyzed through SPSS 25. A paired sample t-test used to measure degree which developed throughout program, responses calculating percentage each item. results present indicate that positive impact enhanced skills. also reflected improved their critical thinking, helped them practice new language arguments, collaboration, decreased anxiety while fun.
